Headland Theatre opens March

We are genuinely excited about the opening of the Headland Theatre at the Tathra Hotel in March — a significant addition to the cultural landscape of Tathra and the wider Bega Valley. For us, this isn’t simply the launch of a new venue. It’s the creation of a flexible, professional performance space on the Far South Coast that expands what’s possible for artists, audiences and creative producers working in the region.

Hotel owner Cliff Wallis  noted that “The theatre is the culmination of ten years renovation of the hotel, none of which would have been possible without the support of the community and tourists”.

Headland Theatre’s strength lies in its adaptability. It has the capacity to host:

  • Theatre productions and creative developments
  • Live music — from intimate acoustic performances to small ensembles
  • Film screenings and curated programs
  • Writers’ talks, book launches and literary events
  • Workshops, rehearsals and residencies
  • Community forums and civic conversations
  • Visual art installations and interdisciplinary work

For a regional area, this versatility is critical. It allows the space to serve both professional touring work and locally generated projects, building a year-round program rather than isolated events.

Headland Theatre is designed as a black box theatre — a simple, highly adaptable performance environment, that includes the following features:

  • Movable seating and staging to allow multiple configurations — end-stage, in-the-round, cabaret or immersive
  • Uses lighting and technical design to shape the experience
  • Brings performers and audiences into close proximity
  • Encourages experimentation and contemporary practice

Unlike traditional theatres with fixed proscenium arches and raked seating, a black box is essentially a blank canvas. It can be reimagined for each production. This makes it especially suited to new work development, contemporary performance and collaborative creative practice.

We see enormous potential in the Headland Theatre as a cultural hub for the Far South Coast. It offers a platform where local and visiting artists can create, test and premiere new work in a professional environment, strengthening the confidence and visibility of regional practice. At the same time, the presence of a flexible, well-equipped venue increases the likelihood of attracting touring performers who may previously have bypassed the region, enriching the cultural life of local audiences.

The theatre also provides professional-standard infrastructure for residencies and creative development, allowing ideas to be nurtured and refined close to home. In doing so, it has the capacity to deepen partnerships between artists, schools, community groups and local businesses, embedding creative activity within everyday community life. Beyond its artistic role, the space can contribute to cultural tourism and year-round activation, supporting visitation outside peak holiday periods and broadening the region’s economic base.

For regional communities, dedicated creative infrastructure matters. It sends a clear signal that arts and culture are not peripheral, but central to community identity, economic vitality and social connection.

The Headland Theatre offers a place where ideas can be explored, stories can be shared and creative risk can be supported. Crimson Rosella Creative Adventures is excited to see how this space will grow — and to be part of shaping its future as a dynamic, inclusive and inspiring cultural venue for the region.
