The September–November season of live performance, music, film and storytelling brings some of Australia’s most exciting artists to one of the country’s most spectacular coastal settings. We are excited to present two quality performances as part of the extended program.
POV is an extraordinary and genuinely unique piece of contemporary theatre. A kid with a camera. Two adults. No rehearsal.
Enter the mind’s eye of Bub, an 11-year-old girl obsessed with documentary filmmaking. In the aftermath of a family breakdown, she turns to dramatised re-enactments to try to make sense of what happened. The twist? At every performance, two new unrehearsed actors play her parents, while a child performer directs the action.
Created by re:group performance collective, POV mashes theatre-making and movie-making together to create exhilarating live cinema. The company includes Bega-born artist and Fling alumnus Solomon Thomas, making this a particularly special opportunity to welcome the work home to the region.
Fresh from a critically acclaimed season at Perth Festival, POV has been winning rave reviews. ArtsHub described it as “an exemplary example of how film and television techniques can be incorporated on stage”, adding that, in skilled hands, “theatre can feel more real than life itself.”
Duet for One is created by composer and media artist Damian Barbeler with celebrated pianist Sonya Lifschitz and pioneering interactive media artist Tim Gruchy, Duet for One is an extraordinary concert experience that unfolds across time and place.
As Sonya performs live at the piano, she appears on screen playing in duet with herself, filmed performing a specially constructed string instrument in striking landscapes across Australia. Combining live music, film, projection, sound sculpture, sound design and elements of ritual theatre, the result is a cinematic and immersive experience unlike anything you have seen before.
A finalist in the APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards, Duet for One showcases Sonya Lifschitz’s renowned expressive artistry alongside Barbeler’s inventive score and spectacular imagery of the Australian landscape. We’re especially excited to welcome this exceptional work to Tathra — just days before Sonya takes Duet for One to the Melbourne Recital Centre. A rare opportunity to experience a performance of this calibre in an intimate regional setting.
