Crimson Rosella
@ Tathra Headland Theatre

In February 2025, percussionist David Hewitt and photographer David Rogers were the first local artists
to get creative in the Headland Theatre, turning the construction site into a huge percussive instrument and performance play-space.

Crimson Rosella @ Tathra Headland Theatre

Situated on one of Australia’s most spectacular headlands, Tathra’s iconic pub is a thriving family-friendly, gambling-free hospitality environment popular with locals and tourists alike.  Since its radical renovation in 2017, Tathra Hotel has embodied authentic community spirit, investing in a range of social and environmental initiatives and infrastructure, support for fire-affected residents and local musicians and events such as Headland Writers Festival.

With support from Create NSW, in 2025 a new partnership between Crimson Rosella Creative Adventures and the heritage-listed Tathra Hotel on Djiringanj Country provides an extraordinary cultural opportunity for our community. As the company-in-residence @ Tathra Headland Theatre, CRCA will curate, develop and produce a welcoming series of programs, projects and experiences to animate this handsome and dynamic, yet intimate new cultural hub.

The program seeks to celebrate our community’s artistic ambitions, build local proficiencies and connect the Far South Coast to the world of ideas through local, national and global networks. Our program focus is artistic and audience development, encouraging broad community participation across a range of experiences from theatre and cabaret to projection and spoken word. The program will reflect and respond to the seasonal rhythms of South Coast life.

Partnerships

Partnerships are at the heart of the 2025 program, building long-term relationships with local partners and likeminded similar-scale colleagues around Australia and beyond. We will seed creative collaborations, connections with local artists and creatives and regular discourse with local, national and global theatre-makers from regional places.

Programs reflect the seasons on the South Coast

The 2025 program must respond to the realities of the building’s construction schedule, but looking ahead, our approach (subject to resources) is a seasonal response to our South Coast landscapes and weather, community rhythms, interests and leisure activities of locals and holidaymakers. We envisage Summer and Autumn abuzz with diverse music and family offerings, discussions and precinct activations. Winter is a time for intense creativity. Our Winter Residency supports artists’ practice-focussed activity, creative work-in-progress, artist talks, skills development. And finally, Spring nourishes the heart, soul and brain. The Headland Theatre becomes a performance hub for works-in-progress showings and creative adventures with our literary friends at Headland Writers Festival, playreadings and Crimson Rosella’s signature Spring Theatre Season.
